The Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest battles in the
Civil War. It took place on September 17, 1862 in Maryland. It was at
once the climax and the end of the first Confederate invasion of the North.
It happened between the U.S. Army of the Potomac under Gen. George B.
McClellan and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under Gen. Robert
E. Lee.

battlefield McClellan made no move. Lee had had read McClellans mind, he
also knew his own men. He knew that his soldiers prestige and morale
would be strengthened if they believed that the Army of Northern Virginia
could never be driven from a battlefield. The retreat did not begin until
the night of the 18th, and by morning the army was safely across the
Potomac. The first campaign to invade the North had ended in failure.
